This weekend, while browsing through the shelves of Blockbuster, I saw a cover for a DVD titled, Weapons (2007), starring Nick Cannon and Paul Dano. At first I was taken back by the matchup of the two actors, and after reading the back of the case, I was more surprised to see a picture of Paul Dano brandishing a shotgun, whilst looking all rugged. I swear, I laughed. There was no way in my mind the filmmakers would be able to pull off portraying Paul Dano as anyway masculine or “badass”, at least in my eyes. He’ll always be, in my eyes, a 16 year old trying to raise a baby on his own on the Lifetime movie, Too Young To Be A Dad.
But as I watch this movie, Weapons, I’m already getting proved wrong. Within the first 2 minutes, generally the opening credits, Paul Dano has gotten some major street cred in his grips. Aside from his often offensive accent, he’s doing pretty good so far.
Also, sharing face time on the cover of the DVD, and is pretty much 1/3 of the main actor in this film, is Mark Webber, aka the main kid in Snow Day! Living in Hawaii, Snow Day came at a time where I was hating the sun and had dreams of the adventures only snow could conjure. Even him acting as Stephen Stills in the new Scott Pilgrim movie is better expected than the character he’s portraying in this movie.
Seriously, this movie is littered with actors who are really playing against the roles they’ve been generally given so far in their careers. I mean, not even Nick Cannon is able to strike any amount of fear in me and I’m a skinny little asian girl. Too many Wild ‘N Out episodes will do that to a person.
* Wow, besides the key players (Cannon, Dano, Webber), this movie lacks acting talent. It literally hurt at parts. I cringed.
